National Geographic-Stalking Leopards

Film footage of a wild leopard in South Africa's Mala Mala preserve has documented unusual animal behavior.

Filmmaker Kim Wolhuter followed a single large male leopard for 18 months, recording the most intimate details of its life. Shot mostly in the dark, when the big spotted cats are most active, the documentary recorded a leopard killing twice in quick succession—once for the hyenas that dogged its footsteps and again for its own meal, so it could eat in peace.

National Geographic-Eye of the leopard

"Eye of the Leopard" provides an intimate view into the life of Legadema, a young leopard growing up in Mombo, Botswana.

Filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert started documenting Legadema's life when she was just eight days old. For the next three years, they captured every step of her life in high definition, watching as Legadema transformed from cub to leopardess.

The film is not a typical nature documentary, but a series of flashbacks to Legadema's youth. As Legadema positions herself to ambush a group of vervet monkeys, for example, the film takes us back to when she first learned this behavior by observing her mother hunting monkeys 60 feet up in the forest. Through this observation, Legadema learns a key behavior: gain the high ground first and hunt down.

We meet Legadema's father, who kills a buffalo. And we spend time with her mother as she teaches her young cub about baboons, lions, hyenas and other leopards.

Nearing adulthood, Legadema makes a desperate mistake when she snatches her mother's kill but drops the carcass to hyenas waiting below. Her mother spats and hisses at her and chases her away.

Ultimately, we see Legadema make her first large kill by herself, making the final rite of passage in her journey from cub to leopardess. But it is bittersweet, for just then she hears her mother's cub call and follows. But this time the call is not meant for her. Mother has new cubs. Now Legadema is ready to go out on her own, armed with the instinct and training to create her own legacy as a leopard.

Lions of Crocodile River

In a merciless corner of Africa, battles rage for survival and supremacy. A lion pride struggles with territory and parenthood in the heart of the Luangwa Valley. Their future depends on the success of the lionesses. Will they raise cubs this year? Mfumu, which means ‘chief’, is the dominant male of the Lagoon pride. An inexperienced guardian, it’s unusual for a male this young to lead a pride of six females. This has not gone unnoticed by the rival male on the opposite bank. Only the full river keeps them apart, for now.

The Lagoon pride lives on a riverbank with the highest concentration of crocodiles in the world. This is the reason Mfumu and his females have been unsuccessful at rearing cubs for the last three years. Crocodile attacks have consistently claimed their young. If they don’t get it right this year, the pride may die out. At the height of the flood Mfumu’s mate, Chipazuwa - ‘the beautiful one’ - gives birth to two cubs, Chimondo, a boy and Katswiri, a girl. She hides them away, protecting them at all costs. Chipazuwa has her work cut out for her. At this stage they are easy targets for her reptilian enemies. Will these cubs survive the rainy season?

Mfumu patrols his territory every day, guarding it well. The rains have come and the Luangwa River rages with full force. For now, the Lagoon pride is safe. Across the river to the east, the rival pride rules. The biggest threat to Mfumu’s legacy, this pride is ruled by a male in his prime. He watches and waits - envious of Mfumu’s territory. Eventually, the dry season will descend on this valley. When the river is low, larger animals can traverse the divide with ease . . . even the big cats. Will the rival male cross the river and take over Mfumu’s pride?

‘Lions of Crocodile River’ takes you into the heart of the Luangwa Valley - a place where territories are redefined with the rise and fall of the Luangwa River. Each year drought ravages this Eden. Over time, the river recedes and changes course, leaving ox-bow lakes and lagoons behind. Teaming with crocodiles, these remaining pools attract thirsty and fatigued prey desperate to escape the scorching heat. A death trap waits. Mfumu and his pride must join the ranks of those who drink from these pools. For both predator and prey, the Luangwa Valley is a treacherous place.

National Geographic-Tigers of the Snow

Blake's words "Tyger, tyger burning bright" come alive in this lush documentary from National Geographic. Tigers of the Snow spotlights the Siberian Tiger, which once roamed over the wide ranges of northern Asia but now is limited to a tiny region on the Sea of Japan. Footage of their active muscles, their piercing eyes, their regal pelt, all attest to the beauty of a dying breed. Russian and American scientists have banded together to study the 300 remaining not-so-gentle giants in an effort to save them from extinction. You'll see these men and women track tigers from helicopters, brave a mother's fury to tag her young, and strive to breed them in captivity. The effort is Herculean, given the massive logging and rampant poaching which cuts down the population and the tigers' territory, but there is hope that we can educate the next generation to protect these beautiful animals and their environment while there's still time. After all, a planet without tigers would be a much poorer place, and Tigers of the Snow shows exactly what we'd miss.
